More and more WordPress shit seems to hit the fan, from constant founder drama, to everything being broken after updates, to everything needing to a be a plugin. Well here comes my icing on the cake that pushed me to doing a test version on Ghost.
Yesterday I logged to my WordPress dashboard for this site, and I saw that Jetpack had downgraded me to a free tier, which disables both social sharing and search. The “listed reason” why was because I am now a commercial site. Apparently if you add any affiliate links, you are automatically considered a commercial site.
WordPress’ built-in search is absolute crap, so you need to add on something else. Because apparently they and Microsoft cannot figure out this hard computer science problem (see Windows start menu (fixed with everything/listary)) Well I spent a while trying Relevancy as well as Ivory Search, I ended up staying with Ivory Search as the speed seemed a tiny bit better, but it’s still complete garbage compared to Jetpack.
Jetpack Social which automatically shares my posts to other social medias was also disabled. Now I had to go back to my old tool called Blog2Social. Originally I left Blog2Social as it didn’t have Mastodon Support and wasn’t as easy to use. Now I went back and added another plugin for sharing to Mastodon.
Why does WordPress not have basic features built-in? Constant updates and the constant workarounds, everything needs a plugin or custom code or this or that. So I made a test blog previously on Ghost for a different project, and I decided to see what a migration to Ghost would look like for Pup On Tech. So, after a bit of finessing, here is an initial sample after a few hours of work of a Ghost version of Pup On Tech currently hosted on my Rasberry Pi 4. What do you guys think? Send me any bugs you see.
