Advent Calendar Day 5
Advent Calendar Day 5

This is day five of the Kaffebox Advent Calendar. Today we're brewing a Costa Rican from the Montaro family roasted by Morgon out of Sweden. It's a honey process and 1900 meters above sea level.

This is actually our second brew of this today. The first brew we followed the exact recipe 18 to 300, 50 gram bloom, 100 grams at 30 seconds, 100 grams more at one minute, and 50 grams at 1:30. We did 18 clicks on the Q Air for that.

Now we are brewing it a second time. We did the same 18 clicks. We did a 15 to 250 which is the same ratio. We did a 45 gram bloom, pour to 150 at 30 seconds, then a 70 gram pour to 220 at about a minute, and then to 250 at the 1:30 mark.

The first brew of this was extremely buttery and cracker-like, almost like a pea and cracker. And then towards the end of the cup it became slightly more sweet, lemony, tea-like. So we'll see how this second version of it goes.

Our total brew time for this one was three minutes or ten seconds, which is in line with what they recommend 3:15 to 3:30 for the slightly larger brew.

The aroma on the coffee is extremely mild as it was on the first brew. Kind of smells like a pretty standard coffee with a little bit of sweetness there, but pretty basic coffee smell.

First taste on this brew:
Buttery tea biscuits just like last time. Just like buttery and graham cracker-y and biscuit-y. Again, very little aroma, maybe a two out of ten on the aroma, but the body is out of those world, probably a ten on the body.

As the coffee cools down it's just increasingly sweetening and still tasting like biscuits for lack of a better word. Almost buttery, smooth. And since this came out almost exactly as it did the first brew, I'm going to now rate it.

Ratings:

  • Aroma: 2/10 it's not a bad smelling coffee, it just doesn't smell like much
  • Acidity: 5/10 not super forward or dynamic but lingering nicely in the background and balancing the coffee
  • Sweetness: 10/10 off the charts
  • Body: 10/10
  • Flavor: 10/10 not bold or super fruity, but genuinely delicate, super sweet, and buttery

The lemony-ness that comes out towards the end is just incredible. Lemon is not usually a flavor note that I love, but it’s sweet lemon really, really nice.

So yeah, overall this I would rate probably a 9.5 out of 10.

This is like a sleeper build of coffee, the ultimate sleeper build. I would just love to sip on this any day of the winter. Just sweet and buttery but with a little bit of tang to show some contrast.

Absolutely brilliant coffee.
