Today is day 13 of the Kaffebox Advent calendar. Today we're brewing our Arbagono Kurupe, which is an Ethiopia from Shamantanto Kebele. It's heirloom, anaerobic natural process, and 2250 meters over sea level by Quo Roasters.

Brew details:

  • 18/300 grams water
  • 5 pours total
  • First pour: 50 grams
  • Second pour: 100 to 150 grams
  • Followed by 3 more pours of 50 grams each
  • Total drawdown time: 3 minutes
  • Grind size: 24 clicks
  • Temperature: 99°C

We brewed this at 24 clicks and it hit the exact brew time. The aroma we are getting off of this is actually quite strong. We're definitely getting really strong fruit vibes, as listed on the flavors, which is red grapes, violet, and velvety mouthfeel.

We're definitely getting a very, very strong red fruit, I guess red grape aroma. Yeah, definitely more grape-like now that I'm smelling it a bit more. This is a 10 out of 10 aroma. It's actually probably even stronger than yesterday's.

In the initial sip, we're definitely getting really strong grapes, and then like a odd backing, I guess violet would be the correct term actually, of like grapes, but like the florals of grapes. Mouthfeel I haven't really felt so much yet just because it's too hot for me. But this is the longest like lingering aftertaste of any coffee I've had all year I think.

As this coffee is cooling down, staying very, very similar with just red grapes and violet, like the violet florals, the mouthfeel is definitely velvety. This coffee is extremely good, but kind of falls short a little bit since it's pretty one dimensional, but it's an absolutely fantastic coffee nonetheless.

Ratings:

  • Aroma: 10/10
  • Acidity: 6/10
  • Sweetness: 7/10
  • Body: 9/10
  • Flavor: 9/10
  • Overall: 8.5/10

It didn't blow me away, but that's just relative to the coffees in this calendar. Relative to the coffees of the year, it's definitely up there in probably the top five. So yeah, that's my rating for Arbigona Curupo.

As I was listening back to what I had been saying, I thought I should re-mention how long the lingering aftertaste was on this, which was definitely the longest of any coffee this year. So that was really cool to experience.
