Kaffebox Advent Calendar Day 12

Today is day 12 of the Advent Calendar. We are halfway through.
Today we're brewing a Kenya, Rungeto KII-AA, from Kirinyaga, Kenya.
The producers are Rungeto Farms Cooperative Society.
It's a mix of SL28, SL34, Batian, and Ruiru11, from a January 2025 harvest.
Washed process, grown at 1600 to 1800 meters over sea level, roasted by Pala Coffee (which was the original Gesha that we did on Day 1).
They gave the same recipe of 15 grams to 55, so a 1:17 ratio, at 95 to 96 degrees Celsius, with a total brew time of 2 minutes 15 to 2:30.
I think we're going to have to be grounded at 15 clicks. It finished mostly at 2:35, and final drawdown was at 3 minutes, so we'll probably want to go to around 17 clicks. We ended up doing 15 clicks the first brew and 18 clicks the second.
Unfortunately, I forgot to write that down when we brewed the Gesha on day one.
But either way, really looking forward to this, as I'm on a Kenyan kick.
The flavor notes are blackcurrant, red and purple berries, which is super up by alley.
The initial smell on this coffee is super fruit forward.
This is the strongest aroma we've gotten on the whole Advent Calendar.
Probably a 9 out of 10 or even a 10 out of 10 on aroma.
Super duper fruit forward.
Not so much red fruit; it's more like blueberries.
As this coffee cools down, it's fantastic as expected.
It has that extremely punchy Kenyan vibe that's hard to explain—you’ve got to just taste it.
It's extremely potent. Honestly, it might be a tiny bit overextracted.
We might get a little more brightness and acidity if we grind a little coarser.
But it's punchy, fruity, and very delicious.
There's basically no tomato retaste, and it's not spice forward whatsoever.
Honestly, one of my favorite types of expressions of Kenyas.
This coffee's a real banger and I'm really enjoying it.
Final Thoughts (First Brew)
We may brew it again.
This is a very current-forward cup, with berries that linger toward the end.
No tomato-y defect.
No significant spice, but lots of that Kenyan punch, which I really enjoy.
I may brew it again to see if we could boost the acidity a bit.
But this was really fantastic.
Initial ratings:
- Aroma: 10/10 — best aroma of the Advent Calendar so far
- Acidity: 7/10 — present, but could be boosted with a coarser grind
- Sweetness: 8/10 — very sweet, though not quite a 10 due to that Kenyan punch
- Body: 7/10 — nice, but nothing groundbreaking
- Flavor: 10/10 — very much my style of coffee
Overall: 8.5/10 at the current moment.
I'm going to try again coarser to push the acidity more forward and brighten it up.
Second Brew
I brewed the coffee again at 18 clicks, using the same 1:17 ratio.
I did 16.4 grams (somewhere around that amount) to 280 grams of water (roughly the correct ratio).
Brewed at 18 clicks on the Q air.
Now, the acidity is more forward, and the fruitiness is more forward.
The sweetness is about the same.
I'm going to bump up the acidity to an 8 out of 10 and keep everything else the same.
Actually, I might drop the body down one point and up the acidity on this.
Absolutely fantastic 9.5/10 overall!
