For years, I have been recommending Honey. I was under the impression they were tracking your web and purchasing behavior and selling it for advertising. Which, for me, was a fine tradeoff, as most people are already being tracked, and at least now they got something useful.
Well, it turns out, as you’re probably already aware, they were stealing affiliate links, as well as providing the ability for stores to pay them to hide coupons—mafioso style. (To be clear, we have no idea if they are selling your tracked data as well, but I would guess they probably are.)
Source for the scam is this video here
And a great follow up video from Dan Saltman calling out affiliate program managers here.
Cleaning Up Your Corner of the World
I was hesitating on posting this or just removing Honey from Techreccs, as most people already know about it, so what am I adding?
For many, many years, I have been watching Louis Rossman. At this point, probably 60 percent of my core philosophies come from him. To say I love Louis and who he is would be a significant understatement. (Do note my bias lol. I bought stickers from his company—they apparently got lost in the shuffle, and he manually delivered them to the post office himself with a handwritten note and a bike gear as a souvenir. If I find the mail, I will post a pic.)
Anyway, he recently posted a video explaining the source of something he has said for years: cleaning up your corner of the world. You should just watch the video as any summarization I have tried doing has come up short.
The secret to becoming an “INFLUENCER” – YouTube
In conclusion, I will clean up my corner of the world. Even though many people already know about the scam, I am posting this anyways in case it reaches even one more person.
