An Ode to things that just work .
Am I just getting old? I just want my stuff to sit in the background and work. To quote Silicon Valley, "Yeah, but Anton doesn't call me anything. He grimly does his work, then he sits motionless until it's time to work again. We could all take a page from his book." I don't want updates; I want stability. I don't want new features; I want my workflows to stay the same! This was inspired by the latest Windows Snipping Tool "update."
So back to the positive things, here are some things I am grateful for that just work. In no particular order:
- This blog, thanks to both Ghost and my hosting provider Synaps Media
- My Raspberry Pi, Debian, and thus my Navidrome, FreshRSS(my server is public for anyone who needs), and Pigeonpod instances
- Backblaze, despite the fact that it's running on Windows
- Paranoid Android Topaz build on my Redmi Note 9 Pro
- My wristwatches
- The Amazfit Helio
- My coffee gear in general
- My glasses and wallet
- My handhelds: Switch 2, Miyoo Mini, TrimUI Smart Pro
- The Mastodon server I use, run by Amin
- Darkroomedits (static site) and Bunnycdn
- Pocket Casts
- Letterbird contact page
- Ditto clipboard manager
- Everything search
- NextDNS
- FastRawViewer
- TeraCopy
- WizTree
No drawn-out babysitting, constant monitoring, or updates faffing about with my configs. The more incredible thing is that there is Windows software that landed here despite Microslops shenanigans.
We need to go back to making durable products and durable software in all senses of the word. I guess I am just getting old; I think a Mac might be on the horizon despite how broke I am.
So, what's your list of things that just work?
